The History of Armani: From Milan to a Global Luxury Icon

The History of Armani: From Milan to a Global Luxury Icon

The History of Armani

Few names in Italian luxury have become as recognisable as Armani.

For decades, the name has represented a particular kind of sophistication.

Clean tailoring.

Soft silhouettes.

Understated colours.

Modern Italian elegance.

And fragrances that have become part of popular culture.

But Armani didn’t begin as the enormous global luxury house we know today.

Its story began in Milan in 1975, when Giorgio Armani founded his own fashion company and introduced a new approach to contemporary elegance.

From tailoring and cinema to fragrances, watches, eyewear and lifestyle, Armani would eventually become much more than a fashion label.

It would become an entire world of luxury.

Who Was Giorgio Armani?

Giorgio Armani was born in Piacenza, Italy, in 1934.

Before entering the fashion industry, his career took a very different direction.

He initially studied medicine before completing his military service and eventually finding his way into the world of fashion.

Armani worked with several Italian fashion companies before establishing his own name.

One of the most important stages of his early career came through his work with Cerruti and the Hitman menswear line.

These experiences helped develop his understanding of tailoring, materials and garment construction.

More importantly, they helped shape an idea that would become central to the Armani philosophy.

Clothing didn’t need to be rigid to be elegant.

It could be softer.

More comfortable.

More natural.

And still incredibly sophisticated.

The Birth of Giorgio Armani

In 1975, Giorgio Armani founded his own fashion company in Milan.

From the beginning, the brand introduced a different interpretation of luxury.

Traditional tailoring often relied on strong structure and rigid construction.

Armani began to challenge that approach.

Jackets became lighter.

Silhouettes became more fluid.

Colours became more restrained.

And the relationship between formal tailoring and everyday clothing began to change.

Armani’s own history describes this as a new balance between structure and freedom.

It was an approach that would eventually become one of the defining characteristics of modern Italian fashion.

Redefining the Suit

One of Armani’s greatest contributions to fashion was his approach to tailoring.

The traditional suit had always been associated with formality.

Armani softened it.

Instead of relying entirely on stiff construction, his designs introduced lighter materials and more relaxed shapes.

The result was clothing that looked sophisticated without appearing overly formal.

The Armani aesthetic became increasingly recognisable.

Neutral colours.

Relaxed tailoring.

Clean lines.

Natural movement.

Quiet confidence.

The Armani archive documents this development from the 1970s onwards, including the brand’s early exploration of deconstructed jackets and softer silhouettes.

Armani had created a new interpretation of luxury.

One where sophistication didn’t have to be loud.

Armani and Hollywood

During the 1980s, Armani’s influence expanded internationally.

His designs became closely associated with cinema and Hollywood.

One of the most important moments came through the 1980 film American Gigolo, which helped bring Armani’s distinctive tailoring to a much wider audience.

The relationship between Armani and cinema became part of the brand’s identity.

The clothes looked sophisticated on screen.

Modern.

Effortless.

Masculine.

And distinctly Italian.

The 1980s became a crucial period in Armani’s international rise, with the brand becoming increasingly associated with modernity and understated elegance.

The Birth of Emporio Armani

Armani’s vision wasn’t limited to one luxury fashion line.

In 1981, Emporio Armani was created.

The new line offered a more contemporary and accessible interpretation of the Armani aesthetic.

It was designed to be more dynamic and suited to everyday life while retaining the sophistication associated with the Armani name.

This was an important development.

Armani was no longer simply creating luxury fashion.

He was building a broader lifestyle universe.

Fashion.

Accessories.

Eyewear.

Fragrance.

And eventually interiors, hotels and other areas of luxury living.

The name Armani began to represent an entire way of life.

From Fashion to Fragrance

Fragrance became an important part of the Armani world.

The philosophy was consistent with the fashion.

Sophisticated.

Modern.

Elegant.

But fragrance offered Armani another way to create an atmosphere.

And one fragrance would become particularly important.

Acqua di Giò.

Acqua di Giò - The Inspiration Behind The Gio

Acqua di Giò arrived in 1996 and became one of the defining fragrances associated with the Armani name.

The fragrance was inspired by the Mediterranean island of Pantelleria, a location strongly associated with Giorgio Armani.

Its character centred around freshness, citrus, aquatic notes, aromatic elements and a smooth woody base.

The result was something that felt completely different from heavy traditional masculine fragrances.

Fresh.

Clean.

Aquatic.

Natural.

Sophisticated.

Acqua di Giò helped establish a style of men’s fragrance built around the feeling of the sea and Mediterranean freshness.

And its influence has continued for decades.

Introducing The Gio

At Ember & Oak, The Gio takes inspiration from this iconic style of fragrance.

The Gio - inspired by Acqua di Giò.

Our interpretation focuses on the fresh, aquatic and refined character that made Acqua di Giò so distinctive.

Crisp citrus.

Fresh aquatic notes.

Aromatic elements.

Smooth woody tones.

A clean and sophisticated masculine finish.

It’s a fragrance designed to bring that feeling of fresh Mediterranean sophistication into the home.

The Gio represents the lighter side of the Ember & Oak collection.

Fresh.

Clean.

Refined.

Sophisticated.

The Gio - inspired by Acqua di Giò.

Armani and Modern Masculinity

While Acqua di Giò represented freshness, Armani’s fragrance portfolio would eventually explore much warmer and more sensual territory.

One of the most recognisable examples is Emporio Armani Stronger With You.

Released in 2017, Stronger With You introduced a warmer interpretation of masculine fragrance, built around spicy, aromatic and sweet elements. Armani Beauty describes the fragrance through notes including cardamom, pink peppercorn, violet leaves, sage, vanilla and a sugared chestnut accord.

It was a very different direction from Acqua di Giò.

Where Acqua di Giò feels fresh and aquatic, Stronger With You is warmer.

Spicier.

Sweeter.

More sensual.

And that contrast demonstrates the versatility of the Armani fragrance world.

Stronger With You - The Inspiration Behind The Arms

The Stronger With You collection became associated with warmth, confidence and modern romance.

Its signature fragrance combines spicy notes with aromatic elements and a sweet, warm base.

The combination of cardamom, pink pepper, lavender, sage, vanilla and chestnut creates a distinctive modern masculine fragrance character.

For Ember & Oak, this provided a completely different kind of inspiration.

Not fresh Mediterranean air.

But warmth.

Depth.

Comfort.

And sophistication.

Introducing The Arms

The Arms is our Ember & Oak fragrance inspired by Emporio Armani Stronger With You.

It’s a warmer, richer interpretation of masculine fragrance.

Spicy aromatic notes combine with sweet, creamy and woody elements to create a fragrance with depth and character.

Where The Gio is fresh and aquatic, The Arms is warm and seductive.

It’s the kind of fragrance that works particularly well during darker evenings and colder seasons.

Warm.

Spicy.

Smooth.

Inviting.

Sophisticated.

The Arms - inspired by Emporio Armani Stronger With You.

Two Very Different Sides of Armani

One of the most interesting things about Armani’s fragrance world is the contrast between its different creations.

Acqua di Giò.

Fresh.

Aquatic.

Citrus.

Mediterranean.

And then:

Stronger With You.

Warm.

Spicy.

Sweet.

Sensual.

They are very different fragrances.

But both carry the same underlying sense of modern sophistication.

And that is one of the things that makes the Armani name so recognisable.

The Armani Philosophy

Armani has always been about more than simply creating products.

It’s about creating an atmosphere.

The fashion.

The colours.

The materials.

The architecture.

The fragrances.

Everything works together.

Luxury doesn’t necessarily need to be excessive.

Sometimes the most luxurious thing is restraint.

A beautifully cut jacket.

A carefully chosen colour.

A sophisticated fragrance.

A beautifully designed interior.

Everything considered.

Nothing unnecessary.

That philosophy is something that strongly resonates with Ember & Oak.

From Fashion House to Global Luxury Brand

Over the decades, Armani expanded far beyond its original fashion collections.

The brand developed accessories, eyewear, fragrances and a wider lifestyle universe, all connected by the same recognisable aesthetic.

Today, the Armani name remains one of the most recognisable in Italian luxury.

But the story has now entered a new chapter.

Giorgio Armani died on 4 September 2025 at the age of 91, after five decades at the head of the fashion house he founded.

His legacy, however, continues through the company, its archive and the design philosophy he established.

The Armani archive now preserves the house’s work from 1975 onwards, documenting the evolution of the brand and its distinctive approach to fashion.

The Ember & Oak Connection

At Ember & Oak, we are inspired by fragrances that have their own identity.

Not simply fragrances that smell pleasant.

Fragrances that create an atmosphere.

Armani’s approach to fragrance is a natural fit for that philosophy.

The Gio explores the fresh, aquatic and sophisticated character inspired by Acqua di Giò.

The Arms explores the warmer, spicier and more seductive character inspired by Emporio Armani Stronger With You.

Two completely different fragrance profiles.

Two very different moods.

But both inspired by the world of Armani.
