You’ve lit your new candle, enjoyed the fragrance and watched the wax melt.

Then you notice something isn’t quite right.

The wax has melted around the wick, but a thick ring of unmelted wax remains around the outside of the jar.

This is known as candle tunnelling.

It’s one of the most common candle problems, and fortunately, it’s usually preventable.

In this guide, we’ll explain why candle tunnelling happens, how to prevent it and what you can do if your candle has already started to tunnel.


What Is Candle Tunnelling?

Candle tunnelling happens when the wax directly around the wick melts, but the wax further towards the edge of the container doesn’t.

Instead of creating an even melt pool across the surface of the candle, the candle burns downwards in a narrow tunnel.

If left untreated, this can mean you’re left with a significant amount of unused wax around the sides of the jar.

The good news?

Your candle usually isn’t faulty.

In many cases, tunnelling is caused by how the candle is burned, particularly during its first few burns.


1. The First Burn Is Extremely Important

One of the biggest mistakes people make with a new candle is burning it for only a short period of time.

For example:

Light candle → burn for 30 minutes → blow it out.

The wick creates a melt pool around itself, but the outer wax doesn’t have enough time to melt.

If this happens repeatedly, the candle can effectively “remember” that smaller melt pool and continue burning downwards.

Give the first burn time.

Ideally, allow the melt pool to develop across most of the surface of the candle before extinguishing it.

For larger candles, this can take considerably longer than a quick evening burn.


2. Don’t Burn Your Candle for Too Little Time

Short burns are one of the biggest causes of tunnelling.

If you’re constantly burning your candle for 20–30 minutes and then extinguishing it, you’re not giving the wax enough time to heat evenly.

Instead, aim to burn your candle for long enough to establish a healthy melt pool.

However, don’t leave a candle burning indefinitely.

It might seem logical that if a short burn causes tunnelling, a very long burn must be better.

Not necessarily.

Candles should never be left burning unattended or for excessive periods.

The goal is a controlled, even burn.


4. Trim Your Wick Before Burning

Before lighting your candle, allow it to cool completely and then trim the wick to the recommended length.

For a wooden wick, keeping the wick trimmed helps maintain a controlled flame.

A wick that’s too long can produce a larger flame, more smoke and excessive heat.

That’s not necessarily a problem.

A healthy wooden wick should produce a controlled flame while gradually creating an even melt pool.

Keeping the wick properly trimmed is particularly important.


6. What If My Candle Has Already Started Tunnelling?

Don’t panic.

If there’s still plenty of wax remaining, you may be able to encourage the candle to catch up.

Try this:

Allow the candle to burn for a controlled period while keeping a close eye on it.

As the melt pool expands, more of the surrounding wax should begin to melt.

For mild tunnelling, several properly managed burns may gradually improve the appearance.

For significant tunnelling

A candle that has developed a deep tunnel may require more careful intervention.
