Hot Throw vs Cold Throw: Why Your Candle Smells Different When Lit
Have you ever picked up a candle, smelled it in the shop and thought:
“That smells amazing.”
Then you light it at home and notice that it smells completely different?
Or perhaps the opposite happens.
You smell the candle when it’s unlit and don’t think the fragrance is particularly strong.
Then you light it, let it burn for a while and suddenly your entire room begins to smell beautifully scented.
There’s a reason for this.
It’s called fragrance throw.
And there are two important terms every candle lover should know:
Cold throw and hot throw.
So what’s the difference?
And why can the same candle smell so different before and after you light it?
Let’s take a closer look.
What Is Cold Throw?
Cold throw is the fragrance you experience from a candle when it isn’t burning.
It’s what you smell when you:
- Open the candle
- Pick it up in a shop
- Smell the wax
- Remove the lid
- Walk past it on a shelf
Essentially, it’s the fragrance of the candle in its unlit state.
This is often the first impression a customer gets from a candle.
And it’s important.
But it doesn’t necessarily tell you exactly how that candle will perform once it’s burning.
What Is Hot Throw?
Hot throw is the fragrance released by a candle while it is burning.
As the candle burns, the wax around the wick melts.
The heat helps release fragrance into the surrounding air, allowing you to experience the scent throughout the room.
This is the fragrance experience you’re actually looking for when you light a candle.
And it’s one of the most important aspects of candle performance.
Why Do They Smell Different?
This is where things get interesting.
A candle’s cold throw and hot throw can be noticeably different because the conditions are completely different.
When a candle is cold:
The wax is solid.
When the candle is burning:
The wax becomes a warm liquid around the wick and heat is being produced.
That change can affect how the fragrance is released and how you perceive it.
A fragrance that smells subtle when the candle is cold can become much more noticeable once the candle is burning.
Likewise, a fragrance that smells particularly strong when cold may develop differently once heated.
That’s completely normal.
What Affects Hot Throw?
Hot throw isn’t controlled by one single ingredient.
It’s the result of several components working together.
🕯️ Wax
The wax forms the foundation of the candle and holds the fragrance before it is released.
Different wax formulations can interact with fragrance oils differently.
This is one of the reasons we carefully selected a coconut-soy wax blend for Ember & Oak candles.

🌿 Fragrance Oil
The fragrance itself obviously plays a huge role.
Different fragrance oils have different characteristics.
Some are naturally light and fresh.
Others are deeper, richer and more intense.
A fragrance can also contain many different notes that develop differently as you experience it.
That’s why two candles with exactly the same size and wick can still have very different fragrance experiences.
🪵 The Wick
The wick plays an important role too.
At Ember & Oak, we use crackling wooden wicks.
The wick controls the flame and therefore influences how the wax melts around it.
The wax, fragrance and wick all need to work together.
That’s why candle making isn’t simply a case of putting fragrance into wax and adding a wick.
It’s about finding the right combination.
🫙 The Vessel
The size and shape of the candle vessel can also influence fragrance performance.
A wider candle has a different melt-pool area from a narrow candle.
The amount of wax being heated can therefore vary.
This is another reason why changing the size of a candle can affect how you experience its fragrance.
🌡️ Temperature
Temperature can affect how fragrance behaves too.
A candle sitting in a cold room and a candle burning in a warm room aren’t experiencing exactly the same conditions.
This is one reason why you shouldn’t necessarily judge a candle’s fragrance performance from a single experience.
Why Can’t I Smell My Candle?
This is one of the most common questions candle customers ask.
Sometimes a candle simply needs time to warm up.
When you first light your candle, the melt pool is still developing.
The fragrance experience can therefore change as the candle continues burning.
This is why it’s important to allow the candle to establish an appropriate melt pool rather than immediately deciding that it isn’t strong enough.
However, never leave a candle unattended or burn it beyond the recommended time in its care instructions.
Always follow the manufacturer’s safety guidance.
Does A Strong Cold Throw Mean A Strong Hot Throw?
Not necessarily.
This is an important distinction.
A candle can smell fantastic when it’s cold but perform differently when burning.
Likewise, a candle with a relatively subtle cold throw can produce a much more noticeable fragrance once lit.
That’s why professional candle makers test the finished candle rather than relying solely on smelling the fragrance oil or unlit wax.
The finished candle is what matters.
Why We Test Our Candles
At Ember & Oak, the candle isn’t considered finished simply because the wax has been poured and the fragrance has been added.
We need to see how everything works together.
That includes:
Wax
Does the wax perform as expected?
Fragrance
Does the scent develop properly?
Wick
Does the wick produce an appropriate flame?
Melt Pool
Does the candle melt appropriately?
Fragrance Throw
How does the scent perform while burning?
Overall Experience
Does everything come together as intended?
That’s why candle testing is such an important part of creating a reliable product.
Hot Throw Isn’t About Making a Candle “As Strong as Possible”
There’s a temptation to think that the strongest-smelling candle must automatically be the best candle.
We don’t necessarily agree.
A great fragrance isn’t simply about maximum intensity.
It’s about balance.
You want to be able to experience the fragrance throughout your space without the scent becoming unpleasant or overwhelming.
The ideal fragrance experience depends on the fragrance itself, the room, the size of the candle and your personal preference.
Some people love a bold fragrance.
Others prefer something more subtle.
And that’s exactly why fragrance is so personal.
Why Different Ember & Oak Fragrances Smell Different
Our collection includes a range of different fragrance profiles.
Some are:
🌊 Fresh & Clean
Bright, fresh and uplifting.
🌲 Woody & Sophisticated
Deep, warm and refined.
🔥 Warm & Seductive
Rich, inviting and atmospheric.
🖤 Bold & Modern
Distinctive fragrances designed to make an impression.
And because every fragrance has its own character, you shouldn’t expect every Ember & Oak candle to smell exactly the same when burning.
That’s part of the fun.
How Long Should You Burn Your Candle?
Good candle care can help you get the best experience from your candle.
Always follow the specific care instructions supplied with your Ember & Oak candle.
Allow the candle to develop an appropriate melt pool, but don’t burn it for longer than the recommended maximum time.
Never leave a burning candle unattended.
Keep it away from children, pets, draughts and anything that could catch fire.
And always place your candle on a suitable, heat-resistant surface.
A properly cared-for candle is not only a better experience, it’s a safer one.
Cold Throw vs Hot Throw: The Simple Answer
So, if you remember nothing else, remember this:
❄️ Cold Throw
How your candle smells when it isn’t burning.
🔥 Hot Throw
How your candle smells while it is burning.
They’re related, but they’re not necessarily identical.
And that’s why smelling a candle before lighting it doesn’t always tell you exactly what the finished fragrance experience will be like.
The Ember & Oak Approach
For us, fragrance is at the heart of everything.
But creating a great scented candle isn’t just about choosing a fragrance that smells good.
