When you light a candle, it’s easy to think that the fragrance is the most important part.
And of course, fragrance is a huge part of the experience.
But there’s something else sitting underneath every Ember & Oak candle that plays an important role in how that candle looks, burns and performs.
The wax.
At Ember & Oak, we use a carefully selected coconut-soy wax blend in our candles.
But why did we choose it?
And what actually makes coconut-soy wax different from other candle waxes?

What Is Coconut-Soy Wax?
Coconut-soy wax is a blend of waxes derived from coconut and soybean sources.
Rather than relying on a single wax, a blend allows candle makers to combine different characteristics to create a wax that works well for the particular candle they’re trying to produce.
For Ember & Oak, that means finding a wax that works beautifully with our fragrances, our vessels and our signature wooden wicks.
The result is a smooth, creamy-looking wax that forms the foundation of every candle we make.
Why Did Ember & Oak Choose Coconut-Soy Wax?
When we created Ember & Oak, we didn’t want to simply choose a wax because it was the cheapest or easiest option.
We wanted the entire candle to feel considered.
From the fragrance to the vessel.
From the wooden wick to the way the wax looks.
Every part contributes to the final experience.
Coconut-soy wax was the right fit for us.

We wanted Ember & Oak candles to look sophisticated even before they’re lit.

At Ember & Oak, fragrance is at the heart of everything we do.

Is Coconut Wax the Same as Soy Wax?
Not exactly.
Coconut wax and soy wax are different types of plant-derived wax.
A coconut-soy blend combines characteristics from both.
This is important because you’ll often see candles described simply as “coconut wax” or “soy wax”, while many candle makers actually use blends.
That’s why we prefer to be clear about what goes into Ember & Oak candles.
We use a coconut-soy wax blend.
Is Coconut-Soy Wax Better Than Other Wax?
There’s no single wax that is automatically the best for every candle.
Different waxes have different characteristics, and experienced candle makers choose their wax based on the result they’re trying to achieve.
Factors such as:
- Fragrance oil
- Fragrance load
- Wick type
- Wick size
- Container diameter
- Pour temperature
- Burn performance
can all affect the final candle.
That’s why we don’t believe in simply saying one wax is “the best”.
Instead, we choose the wax that works best for our candles and our fragrances.
Why Candle Testing Matters
Creating a candle isn’t simply a case of pouring wax into a jar and adding fragrance.
Before a candle reaches a customer, candle makers need to consider how different components work together.
We test things such as:
Wick performance
Does the wick create a suitable flame?
Melt pool
Does the wax melt evenly?
Fragrance
Does the fragrance perform as intended?
Burn behaviour
Does the candle burn consistently throughout its life?
Container temperature
Does the vessel remain within appropriate safety limits?
All of these things matter.
What About Candle Tunnelling?
This is another reason why the entire candle needs to be considered as a system.
Candle tunnelling occurs when the wax melts down around the wick without reaching sufficiently towards the sides of the container.
However, candle performance isn’t determined by wax alone.
Wick selection, vessel size, fragrance, burn time and the way the customer uses the candle can all influence the result.
That’s why proper candle care is important, even with a well-tested candle.
